Lichtsekunden - Resonance
After their two album releases “World Lines” (2023) and “Inseparable” (2024), the previously unnamed trio of Markus Bratusa (guitar), Joe Gridl (bass), and Sebastian Felber (drums) now presents a third album for the first time under their new shared banner “Lichtsekunden.”
“Resonance” (release date: May 15, 2026) is not only a logical continuation of their shared sonic world, situated between a jazz approach and the expansiveness of ambient music, but also an exploration of new possibilities and a clear step forward for the three Austrian musicians.
This time, the recording studio was replaced by an unusual location: the album was recorded in a tower of the centuries-old Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, where Joseph Haydn once worked as conductor and court composer. The album’s production balances these unique, almost magical spatial acoustics with the many fine details of the music, something sound enthusiasts will particularly appreciate. The album opens with the title track “Resonance,” which reflects a deeply moving encounter with a descendant of a Jewish family expelled from Burgenland by the Nazi regime in 1938, during her first visit to her ancestors’ homeland. The intertwined histories of the Jewish Seven Communities in Burgenland and the Esterházy court lend the recording location a profound symbolic weight. More broadly, the piece - and indeed the entire album - serves as an expression of emotional connection and empathy, transcending the boundaries of time and space.
As the album unfolds, “Overcast” surprises with a relaxed groove built on Sebastian Felber’s delicate yet consistently coherent drumming, while “Ostinato” features, among other elements, a noise-heavy guitar solo over a stoic, distorted bass. Fully improvised pieces are also included: “Rime” evokes a frosty winter morning in the Pannonian Plain, and “Tumbolia,” inspired by Douglas Hofstadter’s legendary book “Gödel, Escher, Bach,” takes us on a closing journey into a mysterious, endlessly recursive world. There is certainly much to discover, not only for fans of artists such as Jakob Bro, Paul Motian, or Terje Rypdal, with whom the trio is sometimes compared. “For us, it’s always about the music. It’s about respecting every note and playing from the heart,” says Markus Bratusa. “And the same goes for the pauses,” adds Gridl. “Resonance” will be released on May 15, 2026, on CD as well as for download and streaming.
